New Unreal Engine Update Makes it Better on Mobile Devices

August 31, 2015 by Ian Boudreau

A new update for Unreal Engine brings it up to version 4.9 and adds optimizations for mobile devices.

Epic Games has released a major update to their Unreal Engine, making it easier to use with virtual reality and also mobile devices.

According to the company's press release, Unreal Engine 4.9 features significantly enhanced support for iOS and Android devices, which will now be able to take advantage of dynamic shadows, and movable lights.

The update also provides support for VR devices, according to Epic's press release. The updated engine "introduces VR motion controller support through a single unified interface, starting with HTC Vive Steam VR input, with others such as PlayStation Move and Oculus Rift soon to follow."

Epic says Unreal Engine 4.9 additionally implements support for DirectX 12.

You can read the full list of features included in the update here.

Earlier this year, Epic announced that Unreal Engine would be free for anyone to use, and that instead of charging up front for the use of the system, Epic will charge 5% on revenues after a developer using their engine makes their first $3,000.
