Unpacking Arrives On PS5 And PS4 On May 10th

May 6, 2022 by Alexandra Nicholson

Super zen puzzle game Unpacking is finally due to launch on PlayStation this month. In an update shared on the official PlayStation blog, it’s been revealed by Humble Games and Witch Beam that the smash-hit indie title will be coming to PlayStation consoles on May 10th.

Up until now, Unpacking has only been available to play on Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC, but it seems that PlayStation owners are finally getting a chance to play the BAFTA-winning game. If you haven’t had the chance to play it yet, Unpacking is a compellingly relaxing experience in which players have to unpack boxes of household objects and learn about the items’ owner as they move through different phases of that person’s life. It’s a warm and satisfying game which deservedly won the BAFTA EE Game Of The Year Award earlier this year.

In addition, Witch Beam artist and programmer Tim Dawson has shared some insights into some of his favourite unpackable objects in the game over on the PlayStation Blog. “The items are personal to our main character,” he explains, “and let you learn about her and watch her develop over the course of the game. The items often have a personal connection to you, the player, as you encounter things that remind you of your own life or those people you know.”

Some of Dawson’s favourite items in Unpacking include the alarm clock, the dragon plush toy (which Dawson says he created a webcomic about when he was 17), the set of colouring pencils, the climbing shoes and the chalk bag (attributed to his love of bouldering) and a desktop PC with CRT monitor from the heady days of 2004. The whole game is one big hit of comforting nostalgia, without necessarily being a retro game experience.

So, if you’re a PlayStation owner and you haven’t played this game yet, then basically you absolutely should, and you can from May 10th.
