Final Fantasy VII Remake Combat System Will See Major Changes

July 30, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

Details have been revealed about the FFVII Remake’s combat system.

Fans of Final Fantasy VII may be in for a bit of a shock to discover that the upcoming remake of the game will feature dramatic changes to everything from its combat system to its narrative.

Today, Square Enix director Tetsuya Nomura revealed that the game's combat system is in for a complete overhaul. If you liked the Active Time Battle system, you'll have to get used to whatever it is they have in store for the game, because it's unlikely to make a return.

"We’re not going to be changing it into a shooter or something like that," Nomura told Official PlayStation Magazine (via GamesRadar). "We are going to be bringing dramatic changes, but we want to make sure it’s still recognizable."

Nomura added that the game will be drawing a lot of inspiration from the 2005 movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children with regards to how it looks. However, the studio does not intend to use the 3D models from Advent Children because they were rendered on a completely different technology and that it's been almost ten years since the movie was released. Given the studio's penchant for pushing the envelope in terms of graphics, we are likely to see graphics even better than what the movie offered.

Final Fantasy VII Remake was revealed at E3 2015 during Sony's press conference and is slated for release on both current-gen platforms. It may also be released for the PC, but that has yet to be confirmed.

We've put together a video of the changes you might see in the upcoming remake. Check it out below.
