Horror Adventure Year Walk Receiving Unique Special Edition On Wii U

July 14, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

Even if you’ve played the game before, you may want to check this version out.

Simogo has revealed that they are bringing critically acclaimed horror adventure game Year Walk to the Wii U.

Year Walk was originally made for iOS, and then ported to Windows and Mac.Among the awards it has received are Unity Awards Best 2D Artistic Experience 2013 and Pocket Gamer’s Top 10 best iPhone and iPad games of the year 2013.

In Swedish folklore, the year walk, natively known as arsgang, is an archaic form of Swedish divination. Practised in Southern Sweden during Christmas or New Year’s Eve, a year walker takes a series of steps to temporarily lose his or her Christianity, and summon supernatural creatures. If the year walker survives his or her ordeal, he or she will get a glimpse into the future.

In the game Year Walk, this translates to a series of inscrutable and increasingly creepy puzzles. The game isn’t particularly long but reviewers remark on its disturbing themes, which will stick with you.

In a post on their site, Simogo explains the things they are adding to this very special edition with Dakko Dakko. They will be using the Wii U’s unique features to its optimum, especially on the GamePad.

The touchscreen will have the encyclopedia (previously a companion app for the PC version), the map, and optional hints. Now you can also use the GamePad as a virtual notepad.

The game also uses motion controls, and Simogo says they took pains to ensure it would be easy and intuitive. You still use the left stick to walk around, but also move and point the GamePad to interact with the screen. These  will be subtle and relaxed, so much so that you won’t have to point the GamePad on the TV, and it can rest on your lap.

This choice also means each puzzle will have its own unique control scheme, so even previous players have a reason to check this out.

Simogo have no release date, but development is ending soon. They expect to release Year Walk to Wii U by late summer or early fall.
