Pillars of Eternity 2 Canceled For Nintendo Switch

March 7, 2022 by Dani Cook

Sad news for Nintendo Switch fans.

The popular RPG, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire will no longer be making its way to Nintendo Switch. The game’s publisher, Versus Evil announced the canceled port via Discord saying, “Hey there! Unfortunately, after much deliberation, we have decided not to move forward with Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire for the Nintendo Switch.”

A Switch version of Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire was first announced in 2018 and was later delayed. News of the Nintendo port has been quiet for some time now, so perhaps its cancellation isn’t a complete surprise. Although, it’s definitely a disappointment for fans who were looking forward to playing the 2018 game on Nintendo Switch.

While it’s unfortunate Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire will no longer be heading to Nintendo Switch, there has been a precedent. Versus Evil announced that the first Pillars of Eternity would be going to the Switch in 2019 before canceling the game’s Nintendo launch in February 2021 as well.

Speaking on the decision to cancel the first Pillars of Eternity‘s Switch release, Versus Evil cited the console’s hardware as an issue. The publisher stated it had “reached a limit on what we can do with our updates to the game and have exhausted the options left to us from the PC original in regards to the limitations of the hardware we are working with.” The company has not disclosed the reason for canceling the sequel’s Nintendo Switch port, although there’s a good chance it was canceled for similar reasons.

Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is a 2018 RPG that features seafaring and island exploration via a ship. The game is a direct sequel to Pillars of Eternity and is currently available to play on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the franchise will ever get a release on the portable Nintendo console.
