Splatoon Officially A Million Seller Hit, Nintendo Gives Regional Sales Breakdown

June 24, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

Splatoon is basically a hit in every region it was sold.

Nintendo has announced that Splatoon has sold one million units, in a little less than a month since release.

Splatoon was released in the last few days of May; on the 28th in Japan, the 29th in US and Europe, and the 30th in Australia. That makes out to some interesting metrics, as it came into the sales charts for May just in time.

As you may remember, it was such a hot seller in Japan for those first few days that they ran out of stock in most stores rapidly and Iwata himself apologized to fans. The following week, it was sold out in Japan again, and led to a highly sought after increase in Wii U hardware sales in the region as well.

As for America, NPD reported that the game hit the number 5 spot for May. This is the same month that The Witcher 3 was released. Informally, an insider claimed that they had numbers at 136,000 copies sold.

Of course, Nintendo would know best about sales of their own game, and they shared an intriguing breakdown for sales. Combining physical and digital sales, they sold more than 476,000 units in the Americas, more than 368,000 in Japan, more than 230,000 units in Europe, and more than 20,000 units in Australia and New Zealand.

As you can see, Nintendo can boast high sales of the game in pretty much every region, as Splatoon has become the walking definition of a breakout hit. It bodes well for Nintendo, the Wii U, and Splatoon itself, as spinoffs and future sequels of the franchise are sure to have a rabid, captive audience.

Have you been enjoying Splatoon so far? Or are you still holding out on getting it? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
