In the latest Kickstarter update for The Bard’s Tale IV, InXile confirms that backers will receive digital copies of the original Bard’s Tale trilogy. This is for everyone who has backed the project at the $20 tier or higher.
A re-release of the original Bard’s Tale trilogy has been highly requested, and the folks at InXile made it happen. They’ve gotten Electronic Arts, the owner of the original trilogy’s publishing rights, to sign on to the project.
The emulated versions of the original games should run decently on modern machines, but InXile makes it sound like giving backers just that is a disservice to the fans, so they’ve brought The Bard’s Tale III programmer Rebecca Heineman on board. Heineman and her company Olde Sküül will be updating the original games so they can run natively on PC or Mac. We’re not sure if they can get those to look as stunningly gorgeous as The Bard’s Tale IV in-engine footage, but we’re sure backers will love them. InXile cannot guarantee a release date for the updated versions, but the emulated versions will be distributed as soon as the Kickstarter campaign ends.
The announcement also included details on the soundtrack. Music will likely play an important role in the game, and it’s evident that the team has poured a lot of effort into it. They put in so much effort, they ended up with more songs than could fit on a single CD, so they’ve decided to release it as a Deluxe Double Album. If you backed a tier that includes the digital copy of the soundtrack, you will receive both albums digitally. If your tier includes a physical copy, then you will be receiving two CDs.
“You want it, we’ll build it,” InXile’s Brian Fargo said in the Kickstarter video. We think they’ve proven that they’re willing to go the extra mile to make the fans happy, with this re-release. The Kickstarter campaign has less than a month left, and they’re only about a hundred grand short of their funding goal. If you’d like to back this project, you can do so here.
