Kotaku has obtained some marketing materials and corroborated the information with other sources to reveal that the next expansion for Destiny will be called The Taken King and will be available on September 15 for $40.
The biggest change that this expansion will bring to the game is the addition of three new subclasses, one for each main class.
Referencing a marketing sheet delivered to Kotaku by “a tipster,” Kotaku reporter Jason Schreier writes:
“The sheet—which lists The Taken King at $40—offers a handful of details surrounding Destiny’s next expansion pack. For example, it confirms the existence of a new subclass for each of the game’s three classes, along with a new elemental super ability: an electrical storm for Warlocks (arc); a gravity bow for Hunters (void); and a flaming hammer for Titans (solar). HardcoreDestiny players will notice that each of these abilities revolves around the element each respective class lacks today.”
Kotaku also reports that The Taken King will contain a new raid that will have players fighting against Oryx, father of Crota, who will be leading an army called The Taken, from which the expansions takes its name. Crota was the raid boss featured in Destiny’s first expansion, The Dark Below.
The name of the upcoming expansion falls in line with a trademark filed by Bungie last month.
Last month, Bungie released the second major expansion, House of Wolves. It lacked a new raid, but contained several other additions and fixes.
It is likely that Bungie will make an official announcement for The Taken King at E3 this year, given that this leak comes just one week prior to the biggest videogame event of the year. Be sure to check back here at Gameranx for the latest.
