Sonic Frontiers Was Originally Set To Release Last Year

January 5, 2022 by Dennis Patrick

SEGA was forced to miss the 30th Sonic anniversary launch.

SEGA’s Sonic the Hedgehog has been a staple video game franchise for years. The video game IP was a colossal release back when SEGA manufactured consoles. However, when the company pivoted to software only, the video game IP continued to be a huge success. As a result, several new installments have been released, both with new concepts or tapping back into the nostalgic retro-origin visuals. We know that the next major release is set to be Sonic Frontiers.

Sonic Frontiers was unveiled during The Game Awards 2021. After a successful movie release, SEGA is hoping that this upcoming game will also be a huge hit. We haven’t seen a ton from the game quite yet. Instead, the small trailer reveal was just enough to picture an open-world video game experience that was similar to the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Details are scarce, but a recent investor Q&A with SEGA did note that this game was slated for 2021 initially.

The game was just unveiled and came with the 2022 launch window. However, through the investor Q&A, we learned that SEGA initially wanted to see this game launch in 2021. This was to meet the 30th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog. Apparently, the development team delayed the game to polish the title further and ensure that this new concept would have a strong launch. Although, investors are curious about what exactly Sonic Frontiers will consist of.

When asked about this new game, the developers are keeping details light and confirm that more information will be coming this year. We’re certainly interested in seeing just how a Sonic open-world game would hold up. 2022 should be a very game-heavy year, but for now, Sonic fans will have to practice some patience for Sonic Frontiers’ information.
