Less than two months since its launch, Shin Megami Tensei V has sold over 800,000 units worldwide. This number is particularly impressive when looking at the game’s 2013 Nintendo 3DS predecessor, Shin Megami Tensei IV, which took two years to reach the 600,000 mark.
While the Shin Megami Tensei series hasn’t quite reached Persona levels of popularity abroad, Sega is extremely satisfied with the game’s output, and this fifth installment may become the first entry in the long-running series to reach the 1 million mark. Prior to release, Japanese gaming publication Famitsu rated the game 9 stars out of 10, while many western publications gave the Atlus title similarly high scores.
The Shin Megami Tensei series didn’t arrive outside of Japan until Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne. The PlayStation 2 title was well-received by western audiences, and an HD remaster was released worldwide on Nintendo Switch and PC in May 2021.
Word of the game’s sales was published in Famitsu along with a statement from Atlus regarding the next phase of the Persona 25th anniversary celebration. The product manager of Atlus’ 1st Creative Department Shinjiro Takada has also hinted at a new title coming in 2022 which will be a “pillar title” for the company. While no specific details have been announced, many are speculating that the title in question is Project Re Fantasy, which was announced over five years ago.
Shin Megami Tensei V was released for the Nintendo Switch globally on November 12, 2021. According to dataminers, a PC and PlayStation 4 port of the title may be coming in the near future. A recent update has added the ability to adjust brightness levels, a common player complaint. The game’s soundtrack is scheduled to be released in March 2022 and will feature a total of 117 tracks across five CDs. It will also include a special booklet containing detailed commentary from the composers for each and every track.
