Star Citizen: 48GB Worth of Unreleased Assets Leaked

May 25, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

48 gigabytes worth of unreleased assets from Star Citizen has been leaked.

Star Citizen, a title with a budget of $83 million and growing, saw its first leak today when a community manage posted a partial URL in a screenshot, which lead some community members to guess the rest of the address and discover what amounted to a treasure trove of unreleased Star Citizen assets to the tune of 48GB.

48GB worth of work-in-progress assets were downloaded to completion by two members of the community before the link was discovered by Cloud Imperium Games and quickly shut down.

Here's according to a post on Reddit by lordx3n0saeon, who did a good job summing up what happened:

The story: A community manager for CIG posted a screen shot that included a partial URL. Someone guessed the rest and was able to get on a torrent containing ~48GB of unreleased assets. By the time CIG shut it down 2 people had already hit 100% and it went from there.

IMPORTANT note: CIG has evolved cryengine in several significant ways past "stock" (they have a team of 40+ people to do just that) and people are loading this on the $10 "consumer" version. Many things will not load right/look terrible, and it's also possible this is an outdated model so don't judge the graphics.

The original uploader has said the files contain many different versions so this is mostly good for showing the scale.

A video was produced with the leaked assets showcasing one of the game's ships in CryEngine, which is what the game is being developed in. Check that out below.

It should be kept in mind that all assets loaded up in CryEngine are in no way representative of the final game.
