8GB Wii U Discontinued in Japan, 32GB White SKU Launching Next Month

May 21, 2015 by Stephen Daly

8GB console to remain on sale elsewhere.

The Basic 8GB Wii U console will be discontinued in Japan next month, Nintendo's regional website has revealed.

A new 32GB white Wii U SKU will be released in June to replace the system, joining the 32GB black version which has been available since the system's launch in 2012.

Nintendo UK has told VideoGamer that the 8GB console will continue to be sold elsewhere, with the announcement being "only applicable for the Japanese market".

That being said, the 8GB does seem to be harder to find these days in both the U.S. and UK markets.

Nintendo is due to reveal the Wii U's successor, the Nintendo NX, in 2016.

The platform holder recently confirmed their plans for E3 next month, which will include the first Nintendo World Championships in 25 years. Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata will be skipping the show for the second consecutive year, however.
