Sony introduces the Sony 3D Visor, a Head Mounted Display

August 31, 2011 by Ian Miles Cheong

In contrast to the terrible Virtual Boy, the 3D visor features 750 inches (!!) of display crammed into a small, and thankfully light visor for a whole new level of immersion.

Sony appears to be taking a trip back down memory lane with the introduction of the new Sony 3D Visor. The device looks like something from the 1990s, a time when gimmicky products like the Power Glove were touted by tech firms dime a dozen.

In contrast to the terrible Virtual Boy, the 3D visor features 750 inches (!!) of display crammed into a small, and thankfully light visor for a whole new level of immersion.

The HMZ-T1 Visor is scheduled for release in Japan on November 11, just in time for Skyrim. Changed only slightly from its initial appearance at CES, the visor features two 1280×720 0.7-inch OLED panels mounted in front of each eye to provide viewers 750 inches of display from only 20mm away. It also comes with 5.1 surround sound from integrated headphones. The devices are set to go on sale for a mere 60,000 yen ($783 USD).

I say "mere" because the price is equivalent to that of a high resolution monitor, which isn't much considering the device's 3D capabilities. It remains to be seen if it will gain acceptance outside of the gaming crowd, but I'm definitely willing to try this bad boy out the first chance I get.
