DirectX 12 Superiority Over DirectX 11 Demonstrated With 3DMark API Overhead Test

March 29, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

This could be the edge they need to fight for market share for both Windows 10 gaming and the Xbox One.

Were you still a doubter regarding the performance boost of DirectX 12? We have a new video that demonstrates the boost in action.

We are looking at the classic of performance tests, Futuremark’s 3DMark. To be specific, we use the 3DMark API overhead test. Gameplay was also running on an Nvidia GeForce GTX 770.

This demonstration showed that while DirectX 11 had 2.166.422 draw calls per second, DirectX 12 leaps above it with 10.864.967 draw calls per second. It’s quite clear that if your PC can run it, you need to upgrade to DirectX12. There is not even any room for debate about this.

And if you were wondering, the API Overhead test was actually shared by Microsoft, tweeted personally by Phil Spencer, for fans to see for themselves firsthand how much of a difference DirectX 12 can make.

Also of potential interest is seeing the AMD Mantle logo sitting alongside DirectX 11 and DirectX 12. It seems AMD has pulled rank on their partnership with Microsoft, to ensure that they would also benefit from developers who decide to go all in on DirectX 12.

While PlayStation 4 remains the market leader, and Steam Machines waits in the wings, Microsoft’s technological edge with DirectX 12 could be the edge they need to fight for market share for both Windows 10 gaming and the Xbox One.

Are you excited seeing these results? Or are you waiting to see it payoff in the games first? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
