Civilization 3 Multiplayer Update Now Available on Steam

March 17, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

Steam comes to Civilization 3, enabling multiplayer mode once again.

With a new Steam update of Civilization 3, players can now engage in multiplayer thanks to the developers’ efforts in replacing the game’s GameSpy-driven multiplayer system with full Steam integration. The game functions identically to the GameSpy system, but sees the removal of Direct IP play, which is no longer necessary thanks to Steam.

The online servers for the game were originally disabled last spring after GameSpy’s parent company, Glu, discontinued support for the service. In doing so, they disabled multiplayer for Civilization 3 and a number of other titles.

Firaxis and 2K Games have been diligent in bringing the game up to playable speed with the new update. Every owner of the game on Steam will receive a free update to download that will enable them to play the game in multiplayer. However, those with disc versions of the game will have to submit a support ticket in order to play online.

Savegame data has not been affected by this update.
