Star Citizen’s New Damage Model Looks Devastatingly Impressive

March 9, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

Watch the new damage model in action.

Roberts Space Industries and Cloud Imperium Games have released a new trailer of their upcoming space-sim Star Citizen. In this new video, the developers showcase the game’s damage model that they’ll be using in the game to simulate the destruction of ships in real time.

It’s a rather impressive video that serves to show how ships will behave when shot at by a variety of weapons. It begins with smaller weapons that serve to damage the ship, albeit only cosmetically, followed up by blasts from much larger weapons that actually chip off parts of the ship until it’s left as little more than a husk, as seen from 1:03 onward.

Star Citizen is set for full commercial release sometime in 2016, with beta rollouts of the game’s various “modules” prior to its release. Impressively, the game has managed to garner over $70 million in crowdfunding since it began taking donations in 2012.
