Destiny 2 Needs to be Better Than The First Game

January 19, 2015 by Jacob Saylor

Destiny is not good enough.

At this point, we all know that Destiny 2 is coming. One question that remains addresses the terrible content situation that currently plagues the series' first game. Will Destiny 2 offer players a more substantial amount of content for their $60 buy-in?

If you were to ask anyone to valiantly defend Bungie Studios' Destiny, then you should know that I was among the legion of fans committed to defending the game's honor. If I'm completely honest, though, I recently quit playing Destiny. The lack of solid, game-changing content pushed me away. I kept waiting for something more meaningful to come along, but not even the final act of Destiny made me feel anything – nor did the following downloadable content packages.

Destiny 2 must be better than the first.

Bungie Studios crafted the first Halo trilogy. They are capable – of that I am sure. Their ten-year publishing deal with activision probably puts some constraints on their development schedule, but with the enhanced budget I am sure they are working with, there's no good excuse.

The one largest thing that Destiny 2 has to bring us is a much deeper storyline. I get that Destiny is, first and foremost, a shooter. It gets a pass in some areas that other games wouldn't. That said, it takes advantage of the industry's leniency. I don't think Destiny was a bad game, by any means. That said, we deserve better. If Bungie and Activision want to charge $20 per downloadable content package, then maybe they should lower the cost of the base title by some amount. I wouldn't feel so bad about buying Destiny 2 for $30, if I then had the option to spend $20 on downloadable content post-release.
