Nintendo hasn't quite jumped on the game remasters bandwagon as the rest of the industry has. Sure, there was The Wind Waker HD on Wii U, plus Ocarina of Time 3D (and soon Majora's Mask 3D) and Star Fox 64 3D on 3DS. Seems a bit heavy on the Zelda side, no? Wouldn't you like a remaster of one of the 3D Mario games?
A team of fans has set out to recreate Mario's first 3D outing — check out the early work in the video above, which shows off some early character designs and prototype gameplay. As you can see, the model for Mario is a lot closer to how he looks in recent games, but care was taken that his every twitch and turn matched the original model. This does have the nasty effect of making Mario look incredibly awkward as he runs about with N64 animations, but you have to admire the team's desire to keep the feel consistent.
You can follow progress over on the team's Facebook page. And if you've got the development chops, you can try to join as well!
