3DS XL to End Production in Japan

November 28, 2014 by Tony Ponce

Regular 3DS models will seemingly still be manufactured.

While Japan (as well as Australia and New Zealand, for some reason) gets to enjoy the New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL right now, the rest of the world has to wait until some indeterminate date in 2015. We'll just have to make due with our super-sized 3DS XL models — which may become endangered sooner than you think.

On the Japanese Nintendo page, there is a notice next to all the basic 3DS XL models that states production will be ending shortly. Understandably, Nintendo doesn't want to have an overabundance of hardware models on shelves, especially if it's trying to push the new second thumbstick-equipped machines. However, the original 3DS models have no such notice, meaning that they'll be sticking around for a while longer. Considering that it's the lowest-selling model, why wasn't that scheduled for the chopping block instead of its more appealing, super-sized brother?

This decision obviously won't affect Western territories as long as we remain New 3DS-less. We may be facing the same situation once the New 3DS arrives, though. If want to pick up a 3DS XL, you might want to do that before it's too late.
