This War Of Mine Developers Have An Interesting Response To Pirates

Not all developers will agree, but 11 bit studios’ act of goodwill seems to have sparked interest the game would not have otherwise.

What do you do when you’re a small studio who gets your game pirated? 11 bit studios has a novel solution.

The devs found that their recently released war survival game, This War Of Mine, was getting pirated via a torrent that came out days after the official release last November 14, via file sharing site The Pirate Bay.

Instead of the reaction you would expect to see, the devs did something surprising and laudable. They left a comment on the torrent thanking fans for their interest in the game and giving away 10 Steam keys.

They also told the fans that they can understand if some people are unable to buy the game, and actually tell them it’s OK.

This might not work for every game or developer, but for an unknown like 11 bit studios, this act of generosity can only serve to draw attention to them and their game. Fans in NeoGAF and Reddit, as well as the torrent comments, have nothing but good things to say, and to be fair, the game actually deserves the attention.

In This War Of Mine, you are in the unenviable position of being a civilian stuck in the middle of a warzone. By day, guarded by snipers, you craft, trade, and talk with other survivors, in some cases acting as their support. By night, however, you go out to scavenge, stealing supplies from soldiers and other survivors, even killing when necessary. The game definitely gives players a different experience of war than they usually expect from most military and war themed games.

This War Of Mine is available now on Steam and DRM-free on GOGcom.
