Destiny Subject Of Attempted Widespread Fraud, May Affect Fans Requesting Deliberate Refunds

October 30, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

Microsoft’s Xbox support team found evidence that fraudsters were planning a widespread swindle.

Some fans are unhappy with Destiny, and already looking for refunds for the game. However, this seemingly normal action is apparently being used by some unscrupulous players to commit fraud, and Xbox support is not having it.

Xbox support revealed that they found evidence of widespread perpetration of fraud. In fact, they found a thread with instructions on how to lie to customer support to get a refund.

That thread is no longer online, but it seems that they were mainly using chargebacks to get these refunds. Chargebacks are refunds initiated, not through the company that provided a product, but by forcing the consumer’s bank to get their funds returned to their credit card, line of credit, or bank account.

The details on how chargebacks work are complicated and differ between different countries. However, these are usually seen as a last resort, as the provider of a product or service, in this case, Microsoft or Activision, have mechanisms in place to give consumers the refunds they want.

While Activision and Microsoft is well within their rights to protect themselves, there is a possibility some consumers who did not intend fraud and used chargebacks will be drawn into this. We hope investigations prove fruitful, and any potential fraudsters are clearly identified so that their attempts would be thwarted.

In the meantime, if you are personally looking for a refund for your copy of Destiny for your Xbox, it is best to request said refund through Xbox customer service instead of asking for a chargeback. You may also be better off waiting for this to blow over.
