Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain: Introducing Solid Snake’s Pet Wolf, DD

September 20, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

Snake rescues DD as a child, and DD is trained to help Snake out in the battlefield.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain has a surprising new character, that will perhaps have some gamers seeing Déjà vu. Introducing DD, Snake’s pet wolf.

Diamond Dog, or DD for short, is an optional partner to help Snake, just like the now infamous sniper Quiet. If you can find Diamond Dog as a young cub, Ocelot will be able to train him, and you will be able to use him in missions. The actual scene where you pick up the cub is surprisingly detailed, and indicates that Kojima did his research on how orphaned animals get rescued.

Of course, this is all too familiar to gamers who saw and bought Call of Duty Ghosts last year. The game had a playable German Shepherd, Riley, who served to help sniff out explosives, as well as take out some targets himself.

DD wears the same kind of patch that Snake does, and if you know Kojima, that patch probably is not just there for show. I would wager that it is possible that DD has biomechanical enhancements, possibly similar to those Snake himself has. DD could possible do even more than Riley in the battlefield. He could coordinate attacks with Snake, or be a powerhouse all on his own.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom will be available on Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on 2015. You can actually watch video of Snake finding DD as a cub, next to his recently deceased mother, below.
