Borderlands, Civilization 3, and Civilization IV Set to Offer Steamworks

A number of 2K Games titles have used GameSpy for their online multiplayer modes. These include the likes of Borderlands for the PC, Civilization 3 and its expansion packs, and Civilization IV and its expansion packs.

The system has been nothing short of terrible, providing players with countless hours of frustration and rage-induced migraines to figure it out. As with Relic and Sega’s phasing out of the Games for Windows Live service for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2, 2K Games is doing away with the GameSpy technology server browser and multiplayer matchmaking system for its titles and introducing Steamworks.

The reason for this isn’t simply because GameSpy is crap, but because the GameSpy online offerings have been disabled since March 31 of this year with the shuttering of the service.

Aside from the games listed, 2K will be discontinuing multiplayer support for the following games, which don’t have much of an online presence anyway.
