AMD Says the Xbox 720 Can Render in Avatar Fidelity

July 18, 2011 by Josh Wanamaker

AMD wants you to believe that Microsoft’s next Xbox console will be able to do amazing, completely unrealistic things that don’t make sense.

xbox 720

AMD's director of ISV relationships told the Official Xbox Magazine that the next Xbox will have the capability to render graphics in real time that have the detailed fidelity of that crazy movie about tall blue cat people. Also, it will apparently enable games to have AI and physics that allow for hundreds of individual characters running about doing their own thing.

Ok, this? This is bollocks. I'm telling you right now, the Xbox 720 will not be able to do that. Any of that. Rendering the kind of CGI used in movies takes (specifically in the case of Avatar) a 10,000 square foot server farm with 4,000 HP servers making use of some 35,000 combined processing cores, all running software specific to that purpose. AI and physics are other matters entirely, and all dependent on the software designed to manage them. So this dude at AMD thinks a piece of consumer electronics is going to replace a render farm? Maybe in 10 years.

It's amazing to me that people can get away with saying this kind of stupidity while officially representing a company and not get fired for it.
