Batman Arkham Knight is the ‘Ultimate Batman Simulator’

August 18, 2014 by Stephen Daly

Rocksteady wants their farewell to Batman to be their best yet.

Rocksteady's Gaz Deaves spoke to Orkenplater TV at gamescom last week and spoke about Batman Arkham Knight's engine, graphics, and the Arkham Knight himself.

The developer has significantly overhauled the Unreal Engine for the game and Deaves says:

"It's Unreal Engine 3, our engine team are pretty amazing. You've seen the level of visual fidelity we've managed. One of the things we really wanted to get right is the atmosphere; that oppressive, rainy atmosphere in Gotham. I don't think the sun ever shines in that city. So we spent a lot of time making the rain effects, the steam coming out of vents, really feel like that iconic city."

As for the Arkham Knight, this is what he was willing to share:

"The Arkham Knight is a miltiary leader, he's brought a militia of drone tanks and infantry into Gotham City with the view to occupying it. Putting Batman under pressure, he's working with Scarecrow to take down Batman on this rainy Halloween night and that's really all we're saying about the Arkham Knight."

You can throw batarangs at bad guys even before you land to take some of them out and the line launcher is set to make a big comeback in the game and can be used to shoot out a makeshift tightrope as you're gliding.

Marketing manager Guy Perkins also spoke to GamerGeeks and said the studio is sad that this will be their final Batman game.

"We're saying goodbye, Batman has been part of our lives for many years now but Sefton Hill, the game director, had a very clear vision for the story three acts."

As such, it was imported to make Arkham Knight the "ultimate Batman simulator", Perkins pointed to the Batmobile as a key innovation and one the team really wanted to implement. "It's something we always wanted to do but it was a technical hurdle" they couldn't cross before the release of the new consoles.

Batman Arkham Knight is coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2015.
