DayZ Standalone Pick Up And Play Tips

August 4, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

The new patches have been impactful to gameplay in many different ways.

We have some tips for playing Early Access game DayZ. We won’t be exhaustive here, but all of these tips will be easy to pick up on from the onset, and in almost any context.

  • You can drag the meat icon to the fire, instead of the fire icon, to fill all the slots up.
  • Because of the new textures, animals run much faster. You will need to come armed to take them out.
  • If you get lost, just follow the power lines to find the nearest town. It works in real life and it will work in DayZ.
  • The new tanker helmet can be worn with face masks.
  • You can also get colored chem lights that can light up trails for almost an hour, key word here being almost.
  • There is also a versatile bandanna, you can wear as a cap, face mask, and bandage. They work with helmets and come in different colors.
  • You can find good ammo in stacks of ruined ammo, pick them out, and just use the good ammo.
  • You can restore rags from terrible condition to pristine with the use of alcohol.
  • In the same way, you can repair fire axes and splitting aces by sharpening them on a stern.
  • Splints need two inventory slots, and are made of the materials you need for them.
  • If you are using the mouse wheel or the reload option pops up and you need to get out of it, just right-click.
  • You can push the middle mouse button instead of pressing F to interact with objects.
  • The Shift button now controls the speed you walk, whether you are prone or crouched.
  • Make sure you are not in attack stance if you want to keep moving while switching items.
  • You can throw any item you can put in your hand, just like in River City Ransom.
  • You can walk while in the surrender animation, very useful for when you want to surrender on the go.
  • Military zombies are here and they require twice the damage of civilian zombies to take out.
  • Due to an error, a zombie can still damage you from a distance. Go back to take them out, or make sure they’re dead (again) the first time.
  • Crawler zombies have also been added in, and they jump attack every time.
  • Zombies can walk up stairs, and no longer go through walls. So, you can trap them in houses now.
  • When you’re down on the ground, press Alt to take out your binoculars. You can move your head around with said binoculars and see details from a distance. Binoculars take 2 slots from inventory.
  • Running through trees while raining won’t lead to spam about getting wet.
  • Lastly, here’s a funny, useless tip; when you run across a dead player, you can zoom the camera in and out to make  them open and close their eyes.
