Power Rangers-esque Chroma Squad in Legal Discussions with Power Rangers Owner

July 18, 2014 by Tony Ponce

Developer Behold Studios must either stop development or pay royalties.

Last year, there was a successful Kickstarter campaign for a PC title called Chroma Squad. The aim of the game is to operate a TV studio that airs sentai programming. Sentai, if you aren't familiar with the term, refers to the costumed superhero teams from Japan better known in the West as the Power Rangers. Chroma Squad doesn't just source the Rangers for inspiration, though — it taps all sorts of Japanese "tokusatsu" shows like Ultraman or Kamen Rider. Of course, the references to the Rangers are the most noticeable, which has attracted the attention of the Rangers' parent company, Saban Capital Group.

Posted on NeoGAF is an update originally sent to Kickstarter backers. The message states that development on Chroma Squad's beta was proceding on schedule until attorneys from Saban got in touch. Saban's concerns with the similarities to Power Rangers has led to two potential scenarios: Saban will prevent Chroma Squad from being released, or Behold and Saban will partner up for a royalty share. Naturally, Behold wants to pursue Option B.

At the very least, Saban is being generous in giving Behold the opportunity to continue making the game. How exactly Saban's involvement will affect Chroma Squad is up in the air for the time being. Read the Kickstarter update below for the full story.
