Xbox One vs PS4: Phil Spencer Isn’t Mad At Bungie For Aligning With Sony

July 3, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

Phil may simply be pragmatic about it — or he may know something we don’t.

He didn’t avoid this question at all. Xbox One head honcho Phil Spencer replied to a fan on Twitter, stating he wasn’t mad about the timed exclusive Playstation content for Destiny.

@MeiSquawk No, not at all. Just want them to build a great game.

Of course, as we all know, Bungie bought themselves out of ownership by Microsoft to come back into multiplatform development. As a way of enticing old fans on Playstation, they have been doubling down on incentives for their latest game, Destiny. They have pledged a lot of timed exclusive DLC for the game, and as it turns out, this content will stay exclusive with Playstation owners for as long as a year.

But perhaps, Phil is simply being pragmatic in his response. Although he was a part of the Xbox division when this all went down, he essentially inherited the responsibility for all of this when he was appointed the new head of Xbox. The deals have been made and the paperwork has been signed. It also seems Phil is not going to try to swindle or finagle that exclusivity away from Sony, the sort of thing you would have expected in gaming’s golden days.

Or, a 3rd possibility could be that Microsoft could be or have already finalized deals for their own exclusive DLC. If there is anything to satiate Bungie fans on Xbox who feel cheated or swindled on, I would say this would be it. They could make it Halo related too, so that it would be something Playstation owners would never get. We don’t know the full details on what went down when Bungie separated from Xbox, but here and now, Phil has an opportunity to amend that.
