How to Use the DualShock 4 Wirelessly on a PS3

July 2, 2014 by Ian Miles Cheong

Here’s how to connect a DualShock 4 controller to a PS3 and get it to run wirelessly.

If you own a shiny new DualShock 4 controller, you can now pair it with your PlayStation 3. Thanks to a new update for the device, you’ll be able to ditch your older DualShock 3 controller in favor of a DualShock 4 and even play with it wirelessly and not have to worry about the length of the cable getting in your way.

While it was previously possible to use a DS4 on a PS3, it wasn’t possible to do so wirelessly. The new update, released recently for the PS3, has added wireless support for the newer controller.

The PS3 views the DualShock 4 as a generic controller, so you won’t be able to get all of its functions (such as the touchpad) to work as you might expect. On the other hand, it’s a much better controller than its predecessor, so the trade-off may well be worth it.

Just watch the following video or follow the steps below to pair your DS4 controller with your PS3.

1. Connect DS4 with wire to PS3 then turn on.

2. Go to Accessory settings.

3. Select Manage Bluetooth Devices, and start  scanning for device.

4. Unplug DS4

5. While scanning hold the PS & Share buttons on the DS4.

6. When the light flashes quickly on DS4 plug back in and select Wireless Controller.

7. Let registration complete and then unplug.
