In an interview with Bloomberg, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata is planning to take an early step and move on to the next generation with newer consoles.
"We want to make new things, with new thinking rather than a cheaper version of what we currently have. The product and price balance must be made from scratch," he told the website. This is most likely a response to the dismal sales and reception of the Wii U compared to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. After Microsoft and Sony started to target their crosshairs towards China, it's not impossible to forsee Iwata thinking the same thing.
He also talked about their upcoming near field communication product line called Nintendo Figurine Platform. "We need to start a new business that will someday become one of our core activities," he said. "What is especially unique about NFP is that it is not classed as an accessory product of a certain software title but as a platform itself."
It seems like Nintendo really needs to change its direction especially since they've been reporting millions of loss recently.
The NFP character figurines are expected to roll out by the end of the year for the Wii U. More information about it will be known during Nintendo's presentation in E3.
