Mortal Kombat 9 to Live On Despite GameSpy Shutdown

May 7, 2014 by Ian Miles Cheong

The shuttering of the GameSpy multiplayer service will not affect Mortal Kombat 9.

Mortal Kombat 9 will continue to live on despite the shutdown of the GameSpy service it runs on for the PC version. GameSpy plans to shut down on May 31.

According to a tweet by series creator Ed Boon, who works at NetherRealm Studios, Mortal Kombat 9 is safe and will continue to run online. Although exactly how it’s going to do that has yet to be revealed. Here’s his tweet:

RT @Darklurkr23 @noobde Is mortal kombat 9 safe ed I've asked like 20 ish times. EB: Yes! MK9 will continue to run online.

— Ed Boon (@noobde) May 7, 2014

Boon did not elaborate on exactly what he meant by that, but it’s good news for fans who continue to play the game online.

The studio's most recent game is the DC Comics-themed Injustice: Gods Among Us, and the studio is said to be working on a new game. Ed Boon has been hinting that the next game will be a next-gen only title.
