Nintendo Acquires Development Studio Next Level Games

January 6, 2021 by Dennis Patrick

Nintendo has a new first-party studio.

Nintendo is a pretty massive company and one of the three big contenders for the video game industry. While there is plenty of manpower behind Nintendo to bring out some iconic video game projects along with partnerships for third-party releases, it looks like one company, in particular, decided it was time to sell off the studio and join in with Nintendo. We’re finding out that Nintendo has announced their acquisition of Next Level Games.

Next Level Games has been around for nearly a couple of decades now and it’s brought out quite a few video game titles into the marketplace. Based within Canada, Next Level Games has worked with several companies over the years to deliver video game projects into the marketplace, but they definitely had a solid partnership with Nintendo as their publisher. Over the years we’ve seen a few video games released for the likes of the Nintendo Wii, Nintendo 3DS, to even the Nintendo Switch.

Their last big project came out in 2019 and has been a massive hit for the Nintendo Switch platform in particular. If you’re unfamiliar with their name then chances are you’ll be familiar with their latest video game release, Luigi’s Mansion 3. It seems that Nintendo would be a good fit for the company and its development resources. Nintendo apparently agreed as the company is preparing to purchase the studio later this year.

The acquisition is just getting started so if everything goes according to plan then we should see Nintendo become the official owners of Next Level Games on March 1, 2021. We don’t know just what this will mean for the studio in the meantime. There’s a chance that they may be working on a new project already or that may be on hold until the finalization of the acquisition happens which will allow Nintendo to start making changes.
