Minecraft Earth Will Be Shutting Down This June

January 6, 2021 by Dennis Patrick

Pandemic has Mojang moving resources away from the AR title.

Minecraft is a massive video game franchise it’s enjoyed by fans both young and old so it would be incredibly shocking to find someone that doesn’t know what Minecraft is. There’s also an assortment of spin-off content available for the title as well such as Minecraft Earth and that’s a game that wouldn’t be shocking if you were not familiar with it. This is a mobile game that didn’t get out of early access and now we’re seeing the servers come to an end this year.

Minecraft Earth is a mobile game that was released for free under early access. It’s a lot like Pokemon Go in the sense that the title has players going out in public to play the game. This augmented reality title is more of a sandbox game where moving around in the real world you’ll get to build structures and collaborate with other players. As you can imagine, there’s one area that’s preventing Minecraft Earth from getting any kind of stable footing.

The world is in a mess right now thanks to the worldwide health pandemic outbreak. Not much can be done so we’re left to waiting for vaccines to do their job and hopefully, get rid of the need for so many restrictions to be in place. Unfortunately, it’s a waiting game that Mojang Studios is not up for, and as a result, they are pulling the plug on Minecraft Earth later this year.

With the game focused around players actually going out and enjoying this game, there’s not much Mojang can do. Instead of putting more work into the title, the game will be shutting down in June 2021 and from there the resources will be pulled to other projects. It’s a short-lived game but perhaps we’ll see some kind of resurgence in AR titles after the pandemic is no longer an issue.
