Respawn Isn’t Paying Attention to Call of Duty Killer Label for Titanfall

March 20, 2014 by Josiah Renaudin

The development team is focused on the influence Titanfall will have on the industry, not Call of Duty.

It’s pretty easy to sell Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall as a “Call of Duty killer.” People understand that the development team is made up of people who launched one of the biggest shooters of all time, so saying that their upcoming project is going to be the next king of the castle is just smart marketing on EA’s part. However, Respawn does its best to not pay attention to all that white noise. Instead, community manager Abbie Heppe is focused on the actual influence the game will have sans Call of Duty.

“We don't pay any attention to it, honestly,” she admitted to OXM. Well, that's not fair – we work in the video game industry, we're not blind. But we don't really… we're just doing our own thing. People just want to focus on Titanfall – we don't want to make someone else's game. It'll be interesting to see what influence Titanfall has on shooters, and if it makes any lasting contributions to the genre. I think that's really cool, but we don't do anything like… it's not like keeping up with the Joneses.”

Judging by critical and commercial response, Titanfall is standing tall on its own two mechanical legs.
