Phil Spencer has gone on record to confirm that Games With Gold will come more in line to what gamers expect in the near future.
Phil addressed the issue in SXSW’s gaming panel, where the program was being compared with Playstation Plus. Phil pointed out that the idea with Games With Gold was not to make it a direct competitor to PS Plus, and so the program works differently.
As users already now, Games With Gold only supplies from Xbox’s older library of games, but every game added to the program is free to Gold users for perpetuity. Replicating a program like PS Plus, in his own words, would put a different financial picture on it.
Having said this, Phil explains he has already talked to the staff behind Games With Gold. They are still busy implementing a set program for now, but he’s been working with them to actively pick out titles for the program.
Phil’s carefully selected words seem to indicate that by and large, Games With Gold is not going to change that much more than what it is now, but he will be picking up games that are more current than what Xbox Live Gold subscribers have been receiving now. So, I imagine they’ll be getting games that would be newer than Dark Souls, but not as new as Dark Souls 2.
Phil did not indicate whether the program is coming to Xbox One, but he said details are forthcoming, so this seems to be an inevitability.
