Watch Dogs Creative Director Talks Multiplayer, PC Min Specs, Wii U Delay

March 7, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

Jonathan Morin addresses several Watch Dogs inquiries after the big reveal.

Watch Dogs Creative Director Jonathan Morin has confirmed on Twitter that the game will have open world free roam multiplayer for as much as 8 players.

Thus far, we have only seen the possibilities of competitive multiplayer, with players able to hack each other and compromise the other player’s progress in the game. Multiplayer elements of hacking, stalking, and combat are the same as in the single player campaign, just placed in a different context. In contrast to an MMO game, Watch Dogs could provide a more consistent experience, although whether that is what will play out is another question entirely.

In Jon’s other tweets, he shared the game’s minimum specs for PC:

  • IntelCore 2 Quad Q8400 2.66Ghz or AMDPhenom II X4 940 3.0Ghz,
  • 6GB RAM, 1024 VRAM DirectX 11 Shader 5.0
  • SCard: DirectX9
  • 25 GB

Finally, Jon addresses another question about the delay for the Wii U port. The delay is a sticking point for owners of the console, who for a while were even led to believe that the game was cancelled, just because Ubisoft would not break their own NDAs.

However, this question is an interesting one. If Rayman Legends was delayed release so that it could be released on all platforms including Wii U at the same time, then why did they go the opposite track for Watch Dogs?

Jon explains that they needed to focus on the overall experience for Watch Dogs. With that in mind, they took time off from the people making the Wii U port. Ultimately, it boils down to logistics.

It’s easy to tweet, but it must have been a challenge for the people at Ubisoft Romania. Jon didn’t specify if they had to be flown over to Montreal to consolidate efforts, but even if they didn't have to, it ultimately led to delays for their version. Much like the case with Treyarch and Call of Duty, Wii U simply needs to be handled separately because of its PowerPC architecture.

Ultimately, we hope Ubisoft demonstrates all their efforts will be worth it for all their platforms. We'll keep you up to date when a Wii U release date is revealed, but know for now that Watch Dogs is coming to Windows, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation 3, and Playstation 4, on May 27.
