Randy Pitchford has revealed that Homeworld fans have something exciting to look forward to when Gearbox’s remastering of the classic PC games will finally get released.
Of course, Homeworld was acquired by Gearbox from THQ when that company folded just last year. The games were originally published by Sierra Entertainment. The 1st Homeworld was developed by Relic Entertainment and released 1999. Its expansion, Homeworld: Cataclysm, was developed by Barking Dog Studios and came out a year later. Finally, Homeworld 2 again came back to Relic’s capable hands and released in 2003, making it over a decade since a new installment in the franchise.
Homeworld has a champion in Gearbox: Chief Creative Officer Brian Martel, who is invested in doing right by the franchise. As Randy Pitchford explains, this is the reason the company has overspent on producing an ultra high definition remastering of the game. CEO Randy Pitchford claims fans will be excessively satisfied, with the final product to be at a higher resolution than even 4K screens can output.
Randy was not shy in making allusions to real life hardware. He claims gamers with an Nvidia Titan or 780Ti setup, as well as a 4K monitor, will be treated to something special. The audio is also getting a revamp to match modern expectations.
And, lest we forget, Randy reminds us that Gearbox has also taken over publishing duties for Homeworld Shipbreakers, in development by Blackbird Interactive, itself comprised of many developers from Relic Entertainment.
We have no release dates on any of these games yet, but it's more than certain they'll hit the PC, and you can rest assured a generation of fans are awaiting its release anxiously.
