Square Enix’s Yoshinori Kitase has revealed in an interview that the company is interested in bringing the newer batch of Final Fantasy games to PC, including the Final Fantasy 13 series, and even possibly, Final Fantasy 15.
To be clear, Final Fantasy 11 and 14 are, of course, MMOs on PC, and many older games, such as Final Fantasy 7 and 8, have seen successful rereleases on several digital storefronts as well. We are talking here strictly of the 13 and 15 games, and Square has revealed it was, and is, likelier to happen than we all thought.
The deal with the Final Fantasy 13 games is that they were developed on PC first, and then ported to consoles. Square decided at the time not to push through with PC release for the 1st FF 13 game because of the state of that market at the time, as well as other issues, including security. To put this in context, FF 13 was 1st released in Japan in December 2009, and then came out in the rest of the world March 2010, right at the end of that company’s financial year.
Of course, 2009 was when Valve’s Steam service broke out, as Gabe reported excessively high numbers for new users and game sales. Within this timeframe, Square Enix made their failed bid for the computer on their own, with the initial release of Final Fantasy 14. Hindsight is always 20/20, and so Kitase says they recognize the potential of the market, now that FF7 and 8 have proven to be easy successes on Steam.
Kitase ends by saying that their experience in this area is not that great, but with A Realm Reborn recently hitting Steam, and development for Final Fantasy 15 well underway on the PC like Playstation 4 and Xbox One, it would not be unheard of to see 15 and future Final Fantasy titles hitting Steam Machines in the near future.
For now, all we can say about Final Fantasy 15 is that it is hitting PS4 and Xbox One. Image is from Final Fantasy 15.
