Metal Gear Solid 5 Ground Zeroes Trailer Compares The Generations

February 19, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

There are clear cosmetic differences between 7th and 8th generation consoles, but Kojima has been smart not to promise more than that.

We have a new trailer outlining the big differences in Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes between Playstation 3 and Playstation 4, as well as Xbox 360 and Xbox One, thanks to the magic of Lucas wipes. The trailer is close and upfront about everything. No vague hype here, it’s all clearly and simply outlined.

First off, comparing Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 footage and stills, the trailer demonstrates the PS4 version has improved lighting, shadows, and other effects. They demonstrate several scenarios, including dawn, night, and nighttime rain.

Comparing Xbox 360 and Xbox One footage, the trailer then points out the painfully obvious: increased resolutions and larger texture maps for more details on Xbox One.

Lastly, the trailer shows off Snake’s running animations at full speed, ½ speed, and ¼ speed, for all four consoles, to show off PS4 and Xbox One’s ability to use more frames, resulting in smoother, better looking animations.

Again, this is on YouTube, so I would not put too much stock in comparing PS4 and Xbox One footage here. (I know you will come to your own conclusions, but at least I tried.) In any case, this is an interesting approach, as PS3 and Xbox 360 owners can take heart that Kojima has only revealed cosmetic differences so far. Will 7th gen console owners enjoy the same gameplay that 8th gen console owners get? We will find out soon enough. Ground Zeroes releases March 18.
