realMyst: Masterpiece Edition Now Available on Steam and Mac App Store

February 12, 2014 by Ian Miles Cheong

A remake of the classic point-and-click exploration game is now available on Steam.

There’s a lot to be said about Myst that I won’t say here, apart from stating the fact that it remains, to date, one of the most popular games of all time. The point-and-click exploration game achieved widespread commercial success back in the ‘90s, and spawned a host of copycats and even a pair of sequels called Riven and URU.

Today, the original game has been re-released in a fully updated version as realMyst: Masterpiece Edition, available in real-time 3D to allow players to fully explore and immerse themselves in the environment. The game also introduces day and night cycles, changes in weather, and the introduction of a flashlight for nighttime travels.

"We located and marked every still image location and angle from the original Myst in 3D space in realMyst." said Cyan's Jason Calvert, senior software engineer on realMyst. "The idea was to provide an uncompromising 3D experience with the simple point and click interface that made the original Myst accessible to anyone.”

It’s not the first time the game has been ported into 3D (that was in 2000), but it’s certainly the biggest and most expansive endeavor undertaken by the game’s developers in creating a full and proper realization of the game’s environment.

It’s out today on Mac OSX and Windows PC through Steam and the Mac App Store for $17.99. Owners of the original version of realMyst will receive a 33 percent discount on Steam.
