Amid new criticism that Valve is letting too many games in through Steam Greenlight, we report to you their latest batch of 50 titles approved. In this relatively small batch, one title has made its name before entering here: Energy Hook, from the developer who invented web swinging Spider-Man 2.
Developer in question is Jamie Fristom, technical director and designer at Treyarch when they made the game for Xbox, Playstation 2 and Gamecube. Jamie’s web-swinging game mechanic is well remembered for using physics based algorithms to simulate swinging in new dimensions.
Taking off on his own, Jamie crowdfunded a spiritual successor that used the same mechanic, called Energy Hook, on Kickstarter. Uniquely, he set a goal of $ 1, which is perhaps why he raised the relatively modest goal of $ 41,535.
While Jamie has pledged to make the game (already swearing he will fund a lot of development out of pocket), getting Greenlit could help propel development forward. Jamie claims he is still in schedule to release the game next month, but Greenlight does not necessarily mean just funding – in a matter of days he could be up on Early Access, get help from Valve’s developers, etc.
You may not agree with all the titles on this list, but I’m sure you’ll agree that getting Valve on board to help games like Energy Hook get released is still a positive for Steam Greenlight.
