God of War Developer Expanding, Now has ‘More to Offer’

January 29, 2014 by Stephen Daly

It’s unclear if Sony Santa Monica will be getting a name change.

Sony Santa Monica, the developer of the God of War franchise, is moving to a new studio "four or five times the size" of their current location.

Variety reports that the new studio is located in the Playa Vista neighbourhood of Los Angeles near LAX airport, it's unclear if the developer's name will be changed to reflect its new location.

Among the amenities on offer are a motion capture studio, additional conference rooms, and an improved sound bay. There's also room for smaller developers such as Journey creators thatgamecompany and Unfinished Swan makers Giant Sparrow.

Santa Monica's core team of over 200 people will have room to expand at the new facility. "With the new space we will have more to offer," studio head Shannon Studstill commented.

Writing on the PlayStation Blog Studstill noted:

"For old-timers at Santa Monica Studio, especially those with us since Day 1, it’s hard to believe there was ever a time we moved into an early 1900’s train station — yes, our current home is an old train station — and it felt like new. There are so many great memories over the course of the last decade as we’ve grown to occupy this entire building, from a team that started with 16 people, to a bustling studio family over 220 strong.

"Our current building and the atmosphere that it provides has proven to be a strong part of the fabric of who we are today despite earthquakes, chronic power outages, and even the occasional ghost sighting (watch our Halloween video)."

The studio is developing a game for PlayStation 4 as well as assisting Ready at Dawn with The Order: 1886. Sony won't be pulling out of Santa Monica entirely though, Uncharted maker Naughty Dog is based there.
