Planetside 2 Hacker Attack Leads To Brief PSN, DCUO Outage

January 2, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

Hacker collective DERP claims responsibility for attack as DCUO and Planetside support corroborates it.

Playstation Network is facing an inauspicious start to the year, as hacker collective DERP claims they have hacked into the network, affecting an unspecified number of users.

The ironic part about this is DERP did not even intend to take PSN down. Following their last malicious campaign, they were going after Sony Online Entertainment’s servers on Planetside 2 next, and found that they had taken PSN with it, along with DC Universe Online.

This time, Sony’s official Playstation Support account has no comment to share, at least at this time, but both DC Universe Online and Planetside 2’s Twitter accounts have acknowledged the presence of an issue affecting all SOE services in the last 10 to 11 hours. Since then, they claimed that game services for their respective games have become available.

We are currently investigating an issue affecting all SOE services. We do not have an ETA at this time. Thank you for your patience!

Notably, DC Universe Online opened a support page, indicating they are still investigating issues regarding logging in with PSN IDs. For their part, Planetside 2 has promised Double Experience to active players from now until 11:59 Pacific Time (more or less the next eight hours).

Looking at DERP’s tweets, the blunt of their anger is actually directed against EA, but they alluded to getting a request to take down Planetside’s servers, and it just so happens they do have a contact number on the Twitter profile page. DERP claims to have stopped attacking PSN within the hour. If there are still any SOE / PSN users out there with problems, it may no longer be connected to DERP’s attack, or may be an unintended consequence.

Feel free to let us know in the comments below if you continue to have problems with your PSN or SOE accounts. Image is from Planetside 2.
