Lightning Returns Trailer: Here’s How You Actually Change Lightning’s Clothes

November 11, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Square Enix promises rich customization options so you can get Lightning looking exactly like you want her to.

We have a new trailer for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13, showing off the new shops and customizations options.

Yes, after so many trailers of outfits, popular and mocked alike, here’s where we actually learn how you can change Lightning’s clothes. Customization here is a level above Saints Row (yes, I just did that!) Merchants are innumerable, and outfit combinations are near endless. While the pieces you choose affect your stats, it seems like Square Enix wants you to half treat it like a fashion game.

Aside from Lightning’s clothes, you can refit her weapons, shields and abilities, and even recolor parts of those outfits separately.

The stores featured in the trailer include Divine Protection Outfitters, which offers garb, and Mighty Grandville Forge, which has an array of weapons and shields. You enter a separate menu to weak and tweak the outfits you get. In the trailer, the sword, shield, skirt, part of the collar, and a small belt on the arm, where all colored a bright violet to match.

Maybe this is in keeping with the audience interested in such options, but Lightning did not show much cleavage in this one. It almost feels like buying pre-order or DLC costumes is almost unnecessary, given how much customization you can get in the game.

Of course, in some ways, this still isn’t as rich a palette as Saints Row or any similar action games have to offer. You still stay Lightning, you keep her voice and personality, for good and bad. Still, for those Final Fantasy players who want to play dress up with Lightning, Square Enix has made the game for you. Check out the full trailer below
