New Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut Playthrough Tries To Straight Edge It

November 7, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

No augmentations, no side missions and no killing means a shorter, more streamlined Deus Ex experience.

We have an interesting new guide of sorts for Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut. Someone playing for the first time has decided to play with the minimum amount of interaction possible, maybe in the hopes of a proper speedrun. Apologies, guys, he did not mention the platform, although I would fathom in most cases the experience is similar. He doesn't mention any second screen use so this is likely not on Wii U.

So the idea in this playthrough is to play single minded, meaning avoiding exploration and sidequests as and just trying to get through it as quickly as they can. Playing will be completely pacifist, meaning killing no one, not even knocking them out. The only necessary exception here is against the bosses, only because the game was designed in such a way that it’s not possible to move the story forward otherwise. The player will also go for full on stealth, leaving no trace behind that they were there and hitting no alarms. This part means no looting. Finally, the game is going to be played without getting any augmentations, choosing not to get augmented when asked. It’s almost as if Adam is resentful of his transformation in this one, and avoiding to add to it even further.

So, this playthrough is only possible in the Director’s Cut version of the game, mostly because the pacifist aspect was hotly requested by fans. Allowing for stealth and pacifism brings Human Revolution more in line with the gameplay and philosophy of the original Deus Ex, and it really is a shame killing the bosses is unavoidable.

For the most part, the game passes through smoothly, with the player choices narrowing down options and allowing for a streamlined experience. The player also gives himself leeway to stretch his rules a little, looting a pack from some gang member since it won’t go up the radar, and taking AUDs because he needs them (LOL). You can check out his progress in screenshots below.
