Sci-Fi Battlefield Would be Fun, but DICE Happy with Modern Setting

October 29, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

As of now, the modern setting isn’t holding back the Battlefield series.

You know what would be fun? Shooting down futuristic aircraft with a giant laser as you swiftly jetpack your way to across the sky. Just as you burst through the wreckage of the enemy’s ship, you’re faced with a series of opposing soldiers with enough firepower to put a dent in the planet itself. However, your portable teleportation device allows you to disappear and pop up directly behind those who formerly had a jump on you. After that, it’s an easy day of dog-tag picking.

Maybe I got carried away, but this style of futuristic warfare in a Battlefield game is something plenty of people have considered before. Battlefield 2142 was a fun experiment that series fans have fond memories of, but as of now, DICE's Lars Gustavsson is content with recreating modern settings in the first-person series.

"It's definitely a fact that sticking to any era from true life makes you have to look harder for more possibilities to bring in for cool gameplay, but I think for Battlefield 4 this definitely hasn't been a limiting factor or a limitation," Gustavsson said to OXM. "I think we've found a lot of new ideas and new ways of keeping customizing and adding new toys to the battlefield.

"And to be honest, if we – and I'm not saying that we will, but for the future – if we did continue to go down the contemporary warfare route then yeah, I would seriously look into what we can do that seriously impacts your experience of Battlefield.”

It’s a fun idea to consider, but hey, Battlefield 4 just came out. It’s one of the best looking games on the market, so let’s take some time to enjoy DICE’s current work and save the daydreaming for a slower software period.
