Just because there haven’t been female soldiers in the Battlefield franchise, doesn’t mean the team hasn’t considered it. DICE is absolutely interested in giving players the ability to play as women during the multiplayer matches, similar to what Call of Duty: Ghosts is trying this year. However, the amount of work that goes into adding a new gender isn’t anything to scoff at, but executive producer Patrick Bach has promised its fans that the team is looking into it.
"Yes, but we don't know when we can do that," he told OXM when asked about the including female soldiers. "We have been talking about it quite a lot. We've been looking at how much it's worth, compared to how much we'd have to sacrifice.
"Because it's quite complicated. It's not just [creating] the actual character models – it's all the voice-over work. We have hundreds of thousands of lines that would need to be duplicated, because even now we're cheating quite a lot – we have random male voices, and then you have to multiply that by two. If we do it, we'll do it right, not just to tick a box or something."
Just ticking a box isn’t good enough, so it’s admirable to hear the team taking the idea seriously. But Activision and Infinity Ward will have the leg up in this category when Ghosts launches in the fall, which could lead to a stronger female contingent playing Call of Duty.
