Ikaruga Heads 30 Titles Approved in Latest Batch of Steam Greenlight

Valve’s latest batch of approved titles for Steam Greenlight is a bit smaller than previous batches at 37 titles. This time, classic shooter Ikaruga is the definite highlight, although interestingly enough, mod projects Portal Remake Mod and Half Life 2: Capture The Flag make it in as well.

Venerable action game developer Treasure surprised one and all when they suddenly expressed their interest in Steam, putting up their classic shooter up for Steam Greenlight. Ikaruga itself had previously been released in the arcades, the Dreamcast, the Gamecube, Xbox Live Arcade, and most recently, Android.

While Treasure’s sudden interest and immediate success getting past Greenlight is exciting news for longtime fans, I do want to reiterate that Greenlight is primarily an opportunity for new and fledgling indie developers, who hope to make their mark and find an audience within the Steam community.

In truth, however, I’m starting to wonder about the nature of the recent rapid activity in Steam Greenlight. They have been approving titles in a rapid pace, but we don’t know the status of each of those 100 titles from that mega batch last August. Valve has made it clear that they aren’t approving and processing all those titles all at oncen and we know at least one case where the approved title ended up getting shelved anyway. Therefore, we have to limit our enthusiasm when these titles get greenlit, since it’s still no guarantee they’ll all get published as hoped.
