Ubisoft Won’t Be Releasing Their Games On Steam Anytime Soon

September 3, 2019 by Dennis Patrick

It’s just business.

There are two big competitors when it comes to PC video game purchases and that’s Valve’s Steam marketplace and the Epic Games Store. The latter is a newcomer that’s been making some big moves lately with timed exclusive deals and their free weekly video game titles for players. Now, with that said, there are some other marketplaces gamers can purchase video game titles such as Ubisoft’s Uplay. When it comes to Ubisoft, the video game titles had been staying mainly on the Uplay store but recently started to see new releases through the Epic Games Store. With that said, don’t expect the same treatment for the Valve Steam platform.

It’s been a big battle between Epic and Valve in terms of PC gaming and it’s left a pretty divided argument. When it comes to Ubisoft, the argument comes down to what they found more beneficial for the long-term run and that apparently is the deal being offered through the Epic Games Store. Really, there’s no secret as to why more development studios and publishers are using Epic Games Store even if the company doesn’t offer an exclusivity deal for their project. Frankly, it all comes down to the revenue split.

Having fans enjoy your video game is great, but at the end of the day, to keep the business running, developers and publishers need to turn a profit. When it comes to Epic Games Store, companies that use the store earn 88% of the revenue which is a large portion compared to Steam’s 70%. By using Epic Games Store, Ubisoft is potentially able to secure more sales while keeping as much of the revenue as possible.

If Valve were to change their revenue split to stay a bit more competitive then there’s a good chance we would see Ubisoft make the jump onto the marketplace along with some other studios, but right now it doesn’t appear that any change is going to take place. What are your thoughts on the revenue split argument between the two storefront marketplaces?
