The Last Guardian Was Never on Hiatus, Sony Can’t Confirm Launch Platform

October 3, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

Not only is The Last Guardian still alive, but Yoshida confirms that the game never even went on hiatus.

After years of inactivity, confirmations that development was still happening, and dodged questions, The Last Guardian was said to be on hiatus. At certain times, it even seemed like the long-awaited follow-up to Shadow of the Colossus had even been cancelled, which would be a tough pill for fans to swallow. However, new information coming from Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida indicates that the emotional tale of a boy and his beast has never seen a halt in development at all.

“We're waiting for the right time to re-introduce The Last Guardian in an appropriate way. I can't… Well, the game is in development, and it's well staffed, and Ueda-san is here, working – even though he's not a Sony employee, he's dedicated to the product. But we're not ready to update yet,” Yoshida told GameIndustry International. “Hiatus is misleading. It was a hiatus in terms of releasing new information. The game has never stopped – the team has always been here. They're going through the re-engineering of the game, so the team size is smaller, because it's more engineering focused right now.

When pressed about which platform the game will launch on, Yoshida could give little more than the old “no comment.” Initially planned as a PlayStation 3 release, it now seems like a mistake for the big exclusive to appear on old hardware. This “re-engineering” stage of the project’s life could involve a move to the PS4, but for now, we’ll just have to continue to be patient.
